If you had ever aspired to be rich and sleep on a bed made reeking with that divine currency note smell, you ought to be doing a lot of unlearning. I call it unlearning because you will have to shed all those lessons that your scared, we-care-about-you-so-listen-to-us, momma and poppa and teachers had told you when you were young. They had always told you to work hard, study well and GET YOURSELF A JOB. Now that’s where we do a mistake.
If you look into any Gujarati or a Marwari family, these words are never uttered. They are always taught to take care of business matters and have their kids involved into the daily business affiars from a very young age. Those are signs of the entrepreneurial mindset. Ever seen how they walk around with their heads held high ? Ever seen them cribbing about a 60-minute commute or a pathetic boss? Ever seen them with a gripe about office politics? I haven’t. I have a few marwari friends who did work in an organization to get a feel of the corporate bitching, feel it first hand and then run like hell never to return again.
If you want to change in your life by any degree whatsoever, it requires a little bit of torque and momentum. It requires you to unlearn, implement, learn and unlearn. It will make you think and sometimes you’d even shudder at the very thought of having to live without the security of NOT HAVING TO CHANGE. But then, the choice is yours to make. If you don’t take the plunge. You would never get anywhere. It takes a little bit of guts, a little bit of cockiness and a lot of confidence. However, once you do it, you will feel an overwhelming sense of lightness. Almost as if someone had just taken that heavy atlas off your shoulders. It feels just great to be on your own. To be able to live life on your terms. To be able to call all the shots. To be able to pass a day without the muck at office.
I am a sales guy. I had always believed that if I ever had to do a sale, I would want to do it for my own products or services. I did learn quite a bit from my corporate life, but if you ask me, frankly, these stints had only thought how NEVER TO DO BUSINESS. I had always felt that If I were to be the head of the place, I would have handled things in a better way. I had never liked the way these businesses never cared much about the customer, his values, his interest, his benefits. It had always been sell-and-forget. It was a bunch of shit. I decided then that I would never run a business which would make me go back home and not let me sleep.
The poorest way to get rich is to work for someone else. You’d live with a mistaken sense of security at the cost of your work/life balance equation, at the cost of your self-respect, integrity and a sense of belonging to anything of value. I am not coercing you to leave you jobs today. I am asking you think about it. Atleast, you’d pass off having considered it, if nothing else.
